A storage product that performs perfectly can still fail on a shelf. For private-label programmes the package is not a container — it is the first specification the end customer reads, and in retail it decides whether the product is picked up at all. This guide covers the pack types, the artwork requirements and the marks a retail box carries.
The four pack types, and what each is for
| Pack type | Structure | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blister card | Product on a printed card, sealed under a clear plastic bubble | Hanging display, price-point retail, promotional volume | Bubble depth must clear the product; thin cards bend on pegs |
| Gift box | Rigid box with foam or paper tray | Premium lines, corporate gifting, brand-led positioning | Higher material cost; needs a die-line that protects the product in transit |
| Cardboard / paper box | Folding carton with insert | Volume retail, multi-pack, e-commerce fulfilment | Print finish carries the perceived value — matte and soft-touch read better at the same cost |
| Clamshell | Two-piece plastic shell, heat-sealed | Security-sensitive channels, hardware-store style display | Nearly impossible to open in-store; some markets discourage it for safety |
What a die-line has to specify
A die-line is the flat blueprint of the cut and fold lines for a box. An incomplete die-line is the most common cause of a reprint, because the printer fills the gaps with assumptions. A complete one states:
- The exact flat dimensions and the finished box dimensions after folding — both, not one.
- Board weight and flute direction for corrugated, or board thickness for carton stock.
- The location and size of every window, hang-hole or magnetic closure.
- Fold types: which folds are creased (bent without cutting) and which are cut through.
- The insert or tray geometry if the product is held — the product must not rattle or press against the board.
- Bleed area for the print, usually 3 mm beyond the trim on every edge.
The marks a retail box carries
- Capacity in decimal units, with the unit clearly marked (GB / TB) — and a note that displayed space differs, where the market expects it.
- The interface and speed class the product is sold under, matching the spec sheet exactly.
- Compliance marks required by the destination market — CE for the EU, FCC for the US, plus the RoHS statement where applicable. Only the marks that apply to the certified model should appear.
- Country of origin, and the brand owner’s address or contact where the market requires it.
- Recycling and disposal symbols required by the destination market’s packaging rules.
The artwork checks that prevent a reprint
- Proof on the actual board stock, at final size — not a PDF on a screen. Colour shifts between stock types are the classic surprise.
- Text at final printed size; anything below the printer’s minimum legible size gets rejected after the run.
- Capacity, interface and model number cross-checked against the approved spec sheet, by a second person.
- The logo artwork supplied as vector, with the brand’s clear-space rules respected.
- A physical dummy of the empty box, folded by hand, before the print run is committed.
How packaging interacts with MOQ and lead time
Packaging has its own minimum run: printed boxes are produced in batches, so a programme’s first order usually pays for the full print run even if fewer boxes are needed. That is why packaging decisions belong in the quotation stage, not after the product is made — and why a shared box design across capacities is the standard way to keep the print run amortised across the whole programme.
For the product itself, standard minimum order quantities are 100 pieces per model for USB flash drives, with logo customization available from 10 pieces; the packaging run is the number that actually gates the first shipment. Agreeing both numbers before the artwork is approved is what keeps a retail launch on schedule.
